How do septic tanks work?
Simple yet efficient, septic tanks are essential for treating wastewater in homes and properties that ack access to local sewage systems.
They take wastewater that flows from toilets, sinks, and drains, where it undergoes a natural separation process. Heavier solids settle to the bottom, forming sludge, while lighter materials like oil and grease float to the top, creating scum. In the middle, the partially treated water remains. Beneficial bacteria in the tank break down the organic matter in the wastewater. Over time, the clarified liquid in the middle layer gradually flows out of the tank and into a drain field, where it further percolates through the soil, undergoing additional treatment before reentering the ecosystem. This process ensures that septic systems efficiently and safely manage household wastewater, preventing environmental contamination and ensuring sanitation.
